About Civitas
We believe every campaign deserves access to sophisticated technology, not just the well-funded ones.
Our Mission
Political campaigns have been using the same fragmented, outdated technology for decades. Campaign managers juggle 15+ disconnected tools, waste hours on manual data entry, and pay exorbitant fees for basic features.
We're here to change that.
Civitas is a unified platform that replaces the entire campaign tech stack with one modern, affordable solution. Built from the ground up with today's technology, designed for today's campaigns.
The Problem We Solve
Fragmented Tools
The average political campaign uses between ten and fifteen different software tools to manage its operations. Volunteer coordination lives in one system, donor management in another, voter files in a third, and compliance tracking in yet another. None of these systems share data automatically, which means campaign staff spend countless hours manually copying information between platforms, introducing errors at every step. When a door-knocker logs a voter interaction on their phone, it might take days before that information appears in the campaign's central database—if it ever does at all. This fragmentation creates blind spots, wastes resources, and leaves campaigns flying partially blind when they need complete visibility most.
Outdated Technology
Many of the dominant platforms in political technology were built fifteen or twenty years ago, and it shows. They're slow, prone to crashing during high-traffic periods, and designed for a world where campaigns operated primarily from physical headquarters. Their user interfaces feel antiquated compared to the consumer software people use every day, leading to frustration and low adoption among campaign staff. Worse, their underlying architectures can't support the real-time data synchronization and AI-powered features that modern campaigns need. These legacy platforms have become technical debt that the entire industry carries, slowing down innovation and forcing campaigns to work around limitations rather than benefiting from their tools.
Prohibitive Costs
Enterprise-grade campaign technology typically costs tens of thousands of dollars per month—sometimes more for statewide or national races. This pricing structure effectively locks out smaller campaigns, down-ballot candidates, and grassroots organizations from the same sophisticated tools that well-funded operations take for granted. The result is a two-tier system where campaigns with deep pockets have access to voter targeting, compliance automation, and real-time analytics, while those without struggle along with spreadsheets and prayer. We believe technology should level the playing field, not entrench existing advantages.
Vendor Lock-in
Once a campaign commits to a particular vendor's platform, switching becomes extraordinarily difficult. Proprietary data formats make exports incomplete or nearly impossible. Historical information gets trapped in systems that campaigns can no longer access after their contracts end. Some vendors even claim ownership over data that campaigns believed was theirs. This lock-in not only limits campaigns' choices but undermines the long-term institutional knowledge that political organizations need to build over multiple election cycles.
Our Solution
One platform. Modern architecture. Transparent pricing. Open source foundation.
Civitas unifies campaign management, fundraising, legislative tracking, opposition research, and field operations into a single system that works together seamlessly.
Built Different
- Modern Architecture: No legacy code. Built with 2024 technology for 2024 campaigns.
- Real-time Sync: Data flows instantly across all modules. No more 3-day delays.
- Open Source Core: Full transparency. No vendor lock-in. You control your data.
- Affordable Pricing: Enterprise features at accessible prices.
Our Values
Transparency
We believe that trust is earned through openness. That's why our pricing is published on our website—no hidden fees, no surprise invoices, no "call for a quote" games that waste everyone's time. Our core codebase is open source, which means campaigns can see exactly how their tools work and verify that their data is being handled properly. When something goes wrong, we communicate clearly and quickly rather than hiding behind support tickets. Transparency isn't just a value we talk about; it's built into how we operate every day.
Accessibility
Political technology has long been a game of haves and have-nots. Well-funded campaigns can afford sophisticated voter targeting, real-time analytics, and dedicated support staff, while down-ballot candidates and grassroots organizations make do with spreadsheets and free tools that barely work. We reject this two-tier system. Our mission is to build software that gives every campaign access to the same powerful capabilities, regardless of their budget. When school board candidates have the same tools as congressional campaigns, democracy works better for everyone.
Innovation
The political technology industry has been stuck in neutral for far too long. While consumer software has transformed how people work, communicate, and organize, campaign technology has barely evolved since the Obama era. We're changing that by bringing modern software development practices to political tools: continuous deployment, user-centered design, machine learning capabilities, and mobile-first interfaces. Our engineering team builds software the way the best technology companies do, not the way government contractors do.
Democracy
At our core, we believe that better campaign tools lead to better democratic participation. When candidates can run more effective campaigns, voters get more information, more engagement, and more responsive representation. This isn't a partisan position—we serve campaigns across the political spectrum because we believe the health of democracy depends on all participants having access to effective tools. Our technology is a means to an end, and that end is a more vibrant, more participatory democratic process.
Our Story
The founders of Civitas didn't set out to build a campaign technology company. We were technologists who spent years watching political campaigns struggle with software that should have made their lives easier but instead made everything harder. We saw field organizers fighting with mobile apps that crashed whenever they needed them most, unable to log the voter contacts they'd worked so hard to make. We saw finance directors drowning in spreadsheets because their donor management systems couldn't generate the compliance reports they needed. We saw campaign managers paying for a dozen different tools that should have been one—and still dealing with data that was days out of date.
After the 2022 election cycle, we decided we'd had enough of watching from the sidelines. We knew that modern software development practices could solve these problems, and we knew that the political technology industry wasn't going to fix itself. So we assembled a team of engineers who had built software at leading technology companies and campaign veterans who understood the actual workflows that needed to be supported.
We started building Civitas in early 2023 with a simple premise: what if campaign technology actually worked? What if data synced in real-time instead of overnight? What if interfaces were designed by people who obsess over user experience? What if pricing was fair and transparent? What if you could switch platforms without losing your data?
Today, Civitas serves campaigns across the country, from local races in small towns to statewide efforts in competitive battlegrounds. We've replaced the patchwork of disconnected tools with one integrated platform that actually makes campaign staff more effective. But we're just getting started. Every election cycle brings new challenges and new opportunities to make democracy work better, and we're building the technology to meet them.
